The Sonian Forest produces around 20 000 m³ of wood each year. And the wood exported to Asia represents more than 75% of the totality. Often, a part of this wood will come back transformed into furniture, for our homes, our offices.
But a cooperative, the Sonian Wood Coop., wants to change the situation and avoid this round trip of tens of thousands of kilometers. It wants to exploit the wood of the Sonian Forest here. The project is in fact an action-research carried out, inter alia, by a researcher in circular economy from the ULB.
For Stephan Kampelmann, “instead of letting the added value go by selling the raw material to international buyers, we must keep this material here and create a circular, local economy”.

Le projet est en fait une recherche-action menée entre autres par un chercheur en économie circulaire de l’ULB.
Pour Stephan Kampelmann, “au lieu de laisser partir la valeur ajoutée en revendant la matière première à des acheteurs internationaux, il faut garder cette matière ici et créer une économie circulaire, locale”.

Het Zoniënwoud produceert jaarlijks ongeveer 20 000 m³ hout. En het hout dat naar Azië geëxporteerd wordt vertegenwoordigt meer dan 75% van het totaal. Vaak komt een deel van dit hout terug, getransformeerd tot meubels voor onze huizen, onze kantoren.
Maar een coöperatie, de Sonian Wood Coop., wil de situatie veranderen en deze rondreis van tienduizenden kilometers vermijden. Ze wil het hout van het Zoniënwoud hier exploiteren. Het project is in feite een actie-onderzoek dat onder andere door een onderzoeker, van de ULB, in circulaire economie wordt uitgevoerd.
Stephan Kampelmann: “in plaats van de toegevoegde waarde weg te laten glippen door de grondstof te verkopen aan internationale kopers, moeten we dit materiaal hier houden en er een circulaire, lokale economie rond creëren”.
