A cooperative to keep the wood local

The mission of the Sonian Wood Coop is to relocate the transformation of the wood from the Sonian Forest. We closely cooperate with different partners along the value chain and organise the sustainable production of local high-quality wood products. From the purchase of standing trees to the final use in architecture or design projects, our job is to make sure that all steps along the way are as sustainable, local and qualitative as possible.

La mission de la Sonian Wood Coop est de relocaliser la transformation du bois de la forêt de Soignes. Nous coopérons étroitement avec différents partenaires le long de la chaîne de valeur et organisons la production durable de bois local de haute qualité. De l’achat d’arbres sur pied à l’utilisation finale dans des projets d’architecture ou de design, notre travail consiste à s’assurer que toutes les étapes le long du chemin soient aussi durables, locales et qualitative que possible.

De missie van de Sonian Wood Coop. is om de transformatie van het hout uit het Zoniënwoud te herlokaliseren. We werken nauw samen met verschillende commerciële en niet-commerciële partners die deel uitmaken van de waardeketen en organiseren de duurzame productie van lokaal hoogwaardig hout. Van het aankoop van staande bomen tot het uiteindelijke gebruik in architectuur of ontwerpprojecten, is het onze taak om ervoor te zorgen dat alle stappen onderweg zo duurzaam, lokaal en eerlijk mogelijk verlopen.

Central figure in the entrepreneurial landscape of Brussels, Alexandra is teh coordinator of the Platform for Cultural and Creative Industries at Hub.brussels. and independent board member.
Leonor Leitão de Melo – Observer
Financial analyst at brussels.finance / Brusoc. Leonor participates on the board as observer for Brusoc.

The Sonian Wood Coop. is established as a cooperative company under Belgian law. We are a social and democratic enterprise and this is reflected in our statues: all members of the cooperative have equal voting rights in our general assembly (the principle of “one member, one voice”) and the payout of dividends and variations in share prices are strictly limited. We also adhere to other important principles that recognised cooperatives and social and democratic enterprises have to respect, such as a cap on wage inequality within the organization and a board of directors that takes responsibilities in a collegial manner.

Nous sommes une entreprise sociale et démocratique et cela se reflète dans nos statuts: tous les membres de la coopérative ont des droits de vote égaux dans notre assemblée générale (le principe “un membre, une voix ”) et le paiement des dividendes et les variations des cours des actions sont strictement limités. Nous adhérons également à d’autres principes importants que les coopératives et les entreprises sociales et démocratiques reconnues doivent respecter, comme un plafonnement des inégalités salariales au sein de l’organisation et un conseil d’administration qui prend et assume les responsabilités de manière collégiale.

De Sonian Wood Coop. is opgericht als coöperatieve vennootschap naar Belgisch recht. We zijn een sociale en democratische onderneming en dit komt tot uiting in onze statuten: alle leden van de coöperatie hebben gelijke stemrechten in onze algemene vergadering (het principe van “één lid, één stem”) en de uitbetaling van dividenden en variaties in aandelenkoersen zijn strikt beperkt. We houden ons ook aan andere belangrijke principes die erkende coöperaties en sociale en democratische ondernemingen moeten respecteren, zoals een plafond voor loonongelijkheid binnen de organisatie en een raad van bestuur die op een collegiale manier verantwoordelijkheden neemt.

Walden Project – carpentry company based in Anderlecht dedicated to traditional craftsmanship and sustainability.
The Urban Ecology Centre Brussels – environmental non-profit organisation that works for the reconciliation of contemporary urban life and vibrant local ecosystems.
Osmos Foundation – non-profit foundation based in Amsterdam that invests, supports and manages environmental projects in urban settings.
Brusoc – subsidiary of finance&invest.brussels, a public interest limited company which supports our cooperative via the Coop Us investment fund.
Trividend – the Flemish investment organisation that support social economy, including cooperatives.
Citizenfund – a civic and participatory investment fund that uses finance as a virtuous instrument to bring about the positive changes that society needs.
Dirk Boonen – lumberjack and sawmill operator.
Torben Gysels – senior woodworker.

Le Centre d’écologie urbaine de Bruxelles – organisation environnementale à but non lucratif qui œuvre pour la réconciliation de la vie urbaine contemporaine et des écosystèmes locaux dynamiques.
Osmos Foundation – fondation à but non lucratif basée à Amsterdam qui investit dans, soutient et gère des projets environnementaux en milieux urbains.
Brusoc – filiale de finance&invest.brussels, société anonyme d’intérêt public qui soutient notre coopérative via le fonds d’investissement Coop Us.
Trividend – l’organisation flamande d’investissement qui soutient l’économie sociale, y compris les coopératives.
Citizenfund – un fonds d’investissement citoyen et participatif qui utilise la finance comme un instrument vertueux pour apporter les changements positifs dont la société a besoin.
Dirk Boonen – bûcheron et opérateur de scierie.
Torben Gysels – menuisier principal.
